2025 Winter recital

My passion for singing started when I was very young, but it didn’t come naturally to me. In fact, after an audition in high school, the director pulled me aside to say, “Hallie, you’re a terrific dancer, but you can’t sing worth a lick.” How devastating!

But no wonder—I had never been taught even the very basics of how to sing. I assumed, as I think most people do, that singing is something that should come naturally. Thankfully, I decided not to let it get me down, and with the right teachers I was able to completely transform my voice.

I have since spent many years studying singing with experts in bel canto, opera, and musical theatre. I have used those techniques in countless solo and ensemble performances in community theatre, churches, festivals, etc.

In spring 2025, I placed 2nd in my classical category at the Mid-Atlantic Region NATS competition and 1st in musical theatre at VA NATS. Judges’ comments included, “Beautiful voice,” “lovely, even tone,” “wonderful voice for [baroque music],” “beautiful youthful fresh sound,” and “excellent interpretation of text and embodiment of character!”

For as long as I can remember, I have loved to sing, dance, and perform. Before I got serious about singing, I spent years studying and performing ballet, ballroom, and many other forms of dance. I also participated in many productions as a performer, costumer, and set designer, and I minored in theatre in college (with a handful of elective music courses, too).

Education is a lifelong process, and I study regularly with my own teachers. My current voice teacher is a world-class opera star, and she guides me as I continue to improve my own technique and whenever I need specific guidance for challenges my own students face.

Being in the mentor and mentee roles simultaneously affords me a continuing appreciation of what it is like to be a student, and I am often complimented on my patient teaching style and proven techniques.

I am passionate about teaching children, and I feel strongly that children should be exposed to music early and regularly. As homeschooling mother, I also have a flexible schedule to accommodate your needs.
